After my previous failed attempt at installing Carbide C++[1] to allow me to develop stuff for Nokia E71 (i.e. Symbian), recently I have been digging up the internet on information on how to develop directly in Linux.
After much digging and lots and lots of confusion, I actually managed to find some useful information which allowed me to install a cross compiler and the C++ SDK for my phone (S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1) on my MSI PR200 laptop which runs Debian Lenny (amd64). The compiler was built from source and its build arch is x86_64 linux, so it should be able to be a little bit faster than the precompiled binaries for i686.
The key of the solution was the GnuPoc project and the fork that offers support for platforms newer than S60 v2 which is avilable at:
http://www.martin.st/symbian/
Besides the GnuPoc download, you'll need to install the appropriate toolchain and compiler:
EKA1 + a modfied gcc release - for S60 v1 and v2
EKA2 + CodeSourcery's GCC (I chose the source variant) - for S60 v3 or newer and UIQ
The instruction on Martin's page are really good, so I won't repeat them here.
After this, there's the non-free part, the SDK installation which needs to be downloaded from forum.nokia.com (you need an account on forum nokia, but the download is free of charge). The installation procedure is also explained on Matrin's page and they work properly (at least they worked for me).
By the way, there are two variants of the SDKs: a full SDK (Java, C++) and one only for C++. The instructions refer to the C++ version, but I don't know if they'd work with the full version.
I did everything until this point and I haven't completed and/or tested if things work, but I'll do it and update the information.

Aren't we all descendants of barbarians?
Only the winners get to write the history, so we almost never get to hear the other side of the story.
I was thinking how many times people who were right were reduced to silence by death by some opposing force?
We, as the descendants of the winners, still hold that barbaric seed of the oppressors, so we are probably inclined to repeat such atrocities.
Taking all of these into account, is this one of the main reasons why we still engage war upon each other, although we, as a race, in the present, could live together without any problems?
The world produces now enough goods and food to cater for the entire race, still, we are putting a price tag on everything and using money, the tool that enslaves us all.
Isn't it time to open our eyes and stop believing the lies we're fed with every day?

If you own/have access to a Nokia E71 made for Romania, please contact me
I am trying to contact an owner of a Nokia E71 who is able to input Romanian diacritics on this type of phone. This person shouldn't worry, there is nothing destructive/dangerous involving his/her phone, should he/she contact me.

Some time ago, during my latest blog silence period, I bought a white Nokia E71 phone from a Cosmote dealer.
I am really satisfied with it, except for two or three small issues[0], but the most annoying is that my phone was not made for the Romanian market, so I can't type Romanian diacritics[1].
Why does this matter? Because since I bought this phone I managed to do some translation work on the E71, on the daily commute to work. Still, the lack of diacritics forces me to go through another hop to add diacritics to my .po files when I get home.
So I was thinking on ways to fix this issue. After some google-ing I came up with the following possible fixes:

I haven't made out the details of the files, but, as a first step, I thought that I should try to replace one of those layout files I don't need with a Romanian layout file.
The problem is that I don't have a copy of such a file, but on a phone that works this file should be present and should be easily accessible. For short, I would need a copy of the firmware that is running on the phone, so I can try to replace on my phone the relevant files.

Coordinating localization via git
Note: this is quite long and might not be interesting for people not involved with /in either of: debian i18n, debian l10n, git, shell scripting.
For some time now I have been the de-facto coordinator of the Romanian localization team. During this time I was faced multiple times with problems related to motivation of the team members, setting goals for a release, coordination of the changes inside the team, integration of new translators in the team, loosing team members, my lack of time on some occasions and other problems.
I thought a lot about how to improve on those points and I was never satisfied with the answers I got. What I think was the worst problem in the team was the inability to set clear goals, especially during lenny's development cycle.
During sarge's and etch's development cycles we were in an infancy state and setting as the goal to have a fully translated installation process was really enough to keep people motivated. For sarge we missed by a small margin, but the translations were of poor quality, while for etch we worked more on improving the translations.
But during lenny it was bad, really bad. My free time had been shrinking for a while, starting with etch's release, and we were unable to set clear goal, since for etch we managed to have the installation process fully translated and a few other translations. There was no way for us to reach 100% translations during lenny's development cycle, so setting that as a goal was really unrealistic. Percents by themselves don't mean anything for people, and as long as there's no substance to those numbers, there's no motivation to reach for one arbitrary percent.
I tried to set as a goal translating the packages installed by default in a new installation, but that hit the eternal question How do we know easily which are those packages?. This remained sometimes unanswered or got an unsatisfying answer. Also, there was a goal to have correct diacritics for Romanian in lenny, to have aspell-ro that uses the correct diacritics.
I even got to a point that I, myself, lost my motivation and set myself a personal goal of overrunning the level the translations that the language just above Romanian had in the po-debconf l10n statistics (ranking between languages). This was nice way for me to keep myself motivated, but I had my reserves in making this motivation public out of fear of being misinterpreted, because, by a strange coincidence, that next language was Hungarian, and in Romania's history there was some friction between Hungaria and Romania, while there are still some tensions with the Hungarian minority in Romania, in areas where they represent the local majority.
I managed to reach my personal goal, but this wasn't addressing the big picture.

- provides a po_refresh function that can import material directly from http://i18n.debian.net/material, but can also allow manual imports (template.pot from a call from translation)
- for a new translation: source _bin/polibs (. _bin/polibs), make a directory with the name of the source package, cd into it, and run po_refresh
- po_rearrange - beautify and unify the layout of PO files (facilitating compact and sane diff-ing for PO files)
- po_merge uses compendium, if present
- sync translations/templates from package VCS-es (Vcs-* headers and debcheckout should be the means to the end)
- po_rearrange should be called as a pre-commit hook; should either reject the commit if the po file was not rearranged, or automatically rearranged before the commit
- generate stats
- add commands for "what's outdated", "what needs review", "submit translation", and maybe "reserve translation for offline use"
- conflict merges should be done via po_merge (.gitattributes is key here)
- support other file types (?) - does this make any sense?
- periodic and automated sync with sid for all translations
Problems:
- security - running tests automatically from files within the repo doesn't seem too wise, but looks like the only way to get automated testing on any translator machine; maybe keeping the code in a submodule might address this issue?
- entry level translators still have a hard time - UI sucks now; there should be a wrapper command that should use the library functions and should provide a useful help
- is git too difficult ? - git backend usage maybe should be cloaked?
- still in development/alpha stage - I still haven't figured some of the issues
- central repo or really distributed - should there be a central git repo where the coordinator(s) do the pushes? it seems the central repo with a small pushers team for new translators (which can't commit directly) might actually facilitate interactions between experienced and new translators to instruct/bring up to speed the rookies

signing packages heads-up
When trying to sign some Debian packages fails, you might think that temporally changing LANG to find similar errors on the web is a good idea.
But when you see that the expired key is not the default one and you made sure that the GPG agent environment info is correct, while signing still fails, you might start to consider that bad rendering of the "s comma below" character in your name might be worth taking into account.
gpg: skipped "Eddy PetriÈor": secret key not available
Also, remembering that LC_MESSAGES=C is the right way to have English messages, while preserving all the rest of the localization info, is also useful.

Nokia and WPA2 PSK
Dear Nokia,
I really like your phones and I have been using them for about 10 years, but please understand that WPA2-PSK keys can be up to 64 hexdigits long, not 63.
Please fix this issue on the Nokia E51 phone and any other phones on which this might be the same.
Also, please, don't suggest that I should persuade all the admins that use 64 digits long keys to change them and change every client that already uses such a key, just to allow a phone to use the APs they admin.
P.S.: Could somebody confirm/inform that the same issue affects the Nokia E71?
Update: The bug was confirmed for E51, E65, E66, E71 devices. I sent a report to the support for Nokia about this.

crazy idea: user supported snapshot.debian.net
I just had this crazy idea about solving snapshot.debian.net's space issue which just might work if done right.
We all know that snapshot.debian.net has ran out of space in early May this year and we all lost a valuable service. Since there are probably many users, developers and maintainers which find this service useful, it might make sense to think that the users themselves could solve the problem.
How? Think about implementing a really distributed storage/file system (not necesarly a real file system) that can rely on cluster nodes that can enter or exit at any time and the nodes are contributed by users, very much alike the GoogleFS file system (or maybe clients in a torrent swarm).
First problems that I can already see:

First problems that I can already see:
- there must be some indexing service that should run 24x7 to manage the information about the blocks which are desired.
- some data should always be kept on a trusted machine - the gpg signatures, the Packages files indexing information and meta data
- there might be a security risk involved since data would be stored on untrusted machines, but a sha1/md5 check in colaboration with the gpg signature should be enough (which isn't always doable - see large packages like openoffice.org or game data packages); if there are reasons why this might not be secure, maybe we need to rethink a little about the dpkg-sig package and see if we can get all the packages in the archive to be individually signed when entering the archive, or something of that sort
- the meta-data of the FS cluster might be really big, but my gut feeling tells me that it won't be as big as the current snapshot.d.n storage
- when a file is requested, the file needs to be cached on a central server so it can be assembled and its checksum be verified before being delivered to the client requesting it
- people might donate really little space compared to their usage
- some nodes of the network are special and this could lead to the failure of the entire infrastructure in case the special nodes fail; some of these nodes might turn out to need really big muscles
- some data might be unavailable at times depending on the clients connected to the network at different points in time
- in an attempt to create more copies of a block in more nodes in the network, a DoS might be triggered if many clients request the same info from a (set of) node(s) containing the rare info - still torrent's way of workig seems to cope quite well with that model
- none of this is implemented and probably I won't do it myself, although it could be a really nice project, even it is doomed to fail from day 1
Other ideas:
- maybe it would make more sense for the FS to actually be an ever-growing torrentt which people can connect to via some special client which would allow pushing to the clients in order to store information
- the number of copies of a file (or chunk of a file) in the distributed storage should be higher for more recent packages and lower for older ones (still one copy might be necessary to be stored on safe nodes - aka controled and trusted by debian so the information doesn't get lost - back to our current storage problem)
- probably the entire thing could be built somehow by piggy-backing the current apt-transport-debtorrent implementation or debtorrent, or apt's cache - the idea is that although not all files might be available, some people might still have relatiely recent packages files in their apt cache
- such a system, if done right, might prove to be usable as a live backup system between different nodes in the cluser, so it could be used in other situations by individuals, without the need of a central server - think trackerless trorrents

vga=what in lilo.conf for 1280x800 1440x1024
With the more frequent wide screen laptops using 1280x800 or something else like 1440x1280, most people would want the console in vesa mode to use the entire screen, not only 1024x768.
I was in that situation and wanted to know the "secret code" that was needed for that console mode since these modes for 1280x800 seem to be vendor specific and not a VESA standard. They are not present in the official documentation but can be found with a simple command:
hwinfo --framebuffer | grep 1280x800
and pick one of those that makes sense for you. Add that to lilo.conf, run lilo (run etckeeper commit, if you use etckeeper) and reboot. Enjoy.

migrating from svn to git for wormux's maintainance
I have been thinking for quite some time about migrating the maintenance of the wormux package to git, but in a really smart way so that:

It seems the last point could be obtained in some way via this small set of commands (I am sure it needs some modification to make the integration work in another branch C):

Note: Looking back, I think I can do a better job next time and I will se if I can use the resulting repo to create a new repo and drop the svn package maintainance for wormux. If this works, I might be able to create a script to allow migration of svn-bp maintained packages to git, at least for the Debian Games Team.
Since you can't fix a problem if you don't take things one at a time, I started by cloning the initial git-svn generated repos.
So after waiting some time (both git-svn fetch commands took long enough), I had to git-svn repos:

Due to some confusion I also added 'ups-' as a prefix to the svn remote trunk and tags, but I am still unsure if this was necessary - I'll have to see more clearly into the pristine-tar restrictions area.

It seems the last point could be obtained in some way via this small set of commands (I am sure it needs some modification to make the integration work in another branch C):
git merge --no-commit -s ours B
git checkout B -- .
git checkout A -- .
git commit
Note: Looking back, I think I can do a better job next time and I will se if I can use the resulting repo to create a new repo and drop the svn package maintainance for wormux. If this works, I might be able to create a script to allow migration of svn-bp maintained packages to git, at least for the Debian Games Team.
Since you can't fix a problem if you don't take things one at a time, I started by cloning the initial git-svn generated repos.
So after waiting some time (both git-svn fetch commands took long enough), I had to git-svn repos:
- repo A - the package repo
- repo B - the upstream svn clone repo
In the end I got my A' repo that had:

Yes, and having master in A' is not a good idea, but since I made A' a bare repo I had to suffer. Well, one more thing to better in iteration 2.
Excellent, now I can go in B and add the new remote repo which is A' which I should have called pkgsvn, but I ended up call it 'origin'. Since git-svn doesn't treat the svn repo as a true remote, this was possible.
Due to some confusion I also added 'ups-' as a prefix to the svn remote trunk and tags, but I am still unsure if this was necessary - I'll have to see more clearly into the pristine-tar restrictions area.
After all of this I got this branch configuration:

git-core backport still useless
The versioned depends on tk8.5 has been removed in 1:1.5.6.3-1~bpo40+4, but still, this isn't enough:

The irony is that you can simply workaround with:

git-core etch backport is useless
Update:
It seems that the lenny version (1:1.5.6.3-1) plus some small changes to allow building and running on etch does not have this problem.
The changes include:
* backported to etch
- compile against tcl8.4, instead of tcl8.5
- gtik and git-gui depend on tk8.4, instead of tk8.5
- drop the versioned dep on asciidoc and docbook-xsl
It s really nice that git-core is backported to etch, but is kind of hard to convince people to use it when gitk needs tk8.5, which is unavailable in etch.
This was the reason why previosely I made a local backport (1:1.5.6-1~bpo40+1~local) thinking the missing/extra[*] dep was a temporary glitch. According to bug 456423, this should be safe.
Does backports.org have a buildd network? IIRC, it uses the experimental buildd network, but that doesn't explain the desynchronisation of the packages in etch-backports.
Oddly enough, the build now fails on my etch machine during the tests in t9400-git-cvsserver-server.sh (looks like it is not related to the tk8.5 change):
